Inspired by the intricate traditions of Beijing Opera, we created an interactive digital experience revealing how theatrical makeup and elaborate headdresses come together to shape a performer's iconic appearance.
Through UX/UI design, photography and 3D development, we transformed a complex artistic process into an intuitive, engaging journey of discovery.
In Beijing Opera, the transformation begins long before the curtain rises. Expressive makeup, carefully styled hair and intricate toumian (头面) ornaments come together to create the distinctive appearance of a theatrical character.
Each detail belongs to a centuries-old tradition of performance, artistry and craftsmanship.
Floral ornaments, delicate hairpins, shimmering stones and elaborate decorative pieces — each element plays a part in the composition of a traditional headdress.
Individually intricate. Together, an extraordinary transformation.
The process began with a dedicated photoshoot, documenting the intricate shapes, textures and details of the original ornaments.
The challenge wasn't simply to reveal each detail. It was to make every interaction feel purposeful.
Photography captures the visual qualities of each ornament and provides a considered foundation for the digital interpretation.
Working with 3D specialists, the concept translates intricate shapes and surface details into individual objects ready to be explored.
We designed an intuitive journey through theatrical transformation, balancing guided storytelling with personal exploration. From makeup to headdress assembly, every interaction invites a closer look at the artistry behind each detail.
